Activities for Students 2016-2017 SUMMER SCHOOL: THEMATIC INTENSIVE SCHOOL ON KEY COMPETENCES FOR NATURAL SCIENTISTS CONTESTS STUDENT CONTEST Learning Objects ECHEM-TEST CONTEST
THEMATIC INTENSIVE SCHOOL ON KEY COMPETENCES FOR NATURAL SCIENTISTS An Intensive School on Key Competences was organised in Villa Real (Spain) in the days 22-25 November 2016, as a joint initiative of the City of Villa Real (Spain), Jaume I University of Castellón de la Plana (Spain), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), and the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association. It was held in the frame of the International Fair DESTACA 2016. Interactive workshops and problem-solving classes dealt with design, management and quality assurance of scientific development plans; with implementation of knowledge centre spin-offs; and with funding opportunities for innovative research. In addition, students attended structured English for Specific Purposes courses on communication in scientific environments. The courses were held in English. Based on well-defined standards, characterised by transparent learning outcomes, and applying reliable assessment procedures, the Intensive School on Key Competences was conform to all informal learning validation requirements.

Student Contest 2016-2017 Participants 15 from 3 Countries (Austria, Germany, Poland) International voting: 291 valid votes (of total 368) Mail to all the members of 31 Countries registered at ECTN to nominate a National Coordinator + an Expert in Teaching Chemistry: only 7 reply International Commission for the final evaluation made by only 5 evaluators. Unfortunately the Polish artworks were all in Polish language thus their evaluation create severe problems. On the other hand on the announcement it was reported that the artworks must be preferably in English.
Problems of the Contest Edn. 2016-2017 The announcement was sent June 30 with the following dates: Submission of learning objects will take place from September 15th to December 31st, 2016. The deadline for voting for the national phase will be February 15th 2017. The results will be published at the end of February 2017 on the Contest web page. Instead due to several problems of the server uploading started in December and voting ended March 2017 and the final results of the evaluations from the National Coordinators + Experts in teaching of Chemistry arrived only March 24 2017 and published on the Contest web page.
Proposal for the Contest The participation of the various countries must be higher than in the last editions. Thus members of the WG must be more active in advertising the Contest The WG must define and approve the Contest’s rules and publish them as soon as possible (probably by end of June). The announcement must be sent as soon as possible (possibly before the summer holidays) and published both on the web page of the Contest and on the web page of ECTN. Once fixed the timetable of the Contest we must avoid any changes. The artworks must be translated in English. We must define which kind of artworks are allowed to participate (Word, PPT, Poster, video…) The artworks will be stored in a repository using the server in Perugia and will be available for students and teachers for educational purposes after registration of the user.
Announcement will be published also on the ECTN NEWS. Some new name proposed for the Contest:
How to teach Chemistry Positive Images of Chemistry The contest will be directed not only to:
University students and teachers Also to
Secondary School students and teachers
-Evaluation by National Coordinators + Secondary School Teaching Expert and by registered popular vote. -The artwork should clearly indicate to which audience is targeted (secondary, High Schools, and University Students). The evaluation will be done comparatively to homogeneous categories. -Diplomas for all entries and prizes for the competition winners of each section. Some more comments and suggestions for changes: a) At the time of sending out the contest rules, the contest webpage should be active and should work efficiently meaning that all of the following actions should be possibile: 1) setting up an account, 2) logging in (signing in), and 3) uploading the work. b) Maybe on the webpage of the competition information about the details of file opening, file sharing (movie, webqest, prezi presentation) should be immediately given. For instance specification on executable files: To open the prezi presentation double-click on the .exe file. Your prezi will load. Once it opens, it will be immediately ready for presentation. Note: DirectX 9 or higher is required to view a portable prezi. You’ll also need a dedicated or integrated graphics card. [http://prezi.com/support/article/mac/viewing-downloaded-prezipresentation-portable/]
c) Maybe in addition to the contest page a facebook page could be launched as well - works could also be available on FB and in the evaluation of the work the number of "LIKE"s could be taken into account. d) During the competition rules should not be changed e) Contest rules: 1. The correctness of the content (current state of knowledge on the subject) and the correctness of the didactic aspect must be included in the score. 2. Perhaps it is worth mentioning clearly at the begining that the artwork should also be prepared in English. 3. It may be worthwhile to propose codes such as „PL” at the end of the name of artworks sent from Poland. 4. Artworks should be grouped according to the form or level of education of the author, for example, so that the static conceptual map or the educational poster would not compete in one category with an interactive course on the platform. Another example could relate to the grouping based on participant’s backround: technical higher school students, upper secondary school students and academic teachers. Maybe it is worthwhile to propose specific categories for the artwork to be chosen in the contest rules? 5. Can artworks be assessed in each category separately? With the aim of choosing the best work in a given category - the winning work would be the one that has the highest score in each category. Or one could reward every artwork in each of the categories? 6. Is worth to mention where all the artworks from the international stage will be posted. All artworks should be available after the end of each edition of the competition and made available to a wider circle, for example, teachers could use them. 7. Maybe it is worth pointing out immediately that a graphic abstract of work in the form of png should be send with the artwork?
